Posted July 6th, 2010 and last modified March 10th, 2011

When you buy a home you should make sure it is free of any structural damage. Furthermore, you should make sure that the house is free of any pests that may cause structural damage. Termites are a very destructive pest as they can affect the structural integrity of a house and end up costing you a lot of money in repairs. Fortunately, you can inspect a house you are considering buying for termites. This article will explain what termites are, what damage they can cause, what you can do if you find termites and how you can then prevent termites infesting your home.

What are Termites

Termites are insects that make their homes in wood. They make their homes in the wood by boring into wood. They produce very rapidly and can grow in numbers very fast. Unfortunately, for homeowners if termites decide to use their house as a home they can cause a lot of damage as the frame of houses are made from wood, as well as much of your furniture, walls, kitchens and flooring.

What they can do to a building

Termites can be very destructive to homes. This section of the article will explain what damage termites can do to a home:

  • Weaken the building. Termites bore into wood to create their homes and because most of the frame of a house is made out of wood they can cause a lot of damage. By boring into the wood they will weaken the wood as it will become hollow. As the wood is hollow it will not support the weight it is originally put there for.
  • Cost you a lot of money. If a termite problem is left unchecked then it can cause a lot of problems. If the frame is weekended substantially then you may have to replace the frame after the termites are eradicated. This means that builders will have to know down walls to remove the hollow wood to replace it with new pieces. This can be a very expensive exercise.

Inspect for Termites before you buy a Property

Before you buy a property it is recommended that you inspect for termites. Termites can often infect a house without it being noticeable from the outside. By inspecting for termites before you buy a property you may be able to avoid all the costs associated with extermination or fixing the damage that has been caused.

What to do if you have Found Termites

If you have found termites in a property that you are considering buying get an extent of the infestation and the damaged that has been caused. If this was an unknown problem you may be able to get the price of the house lowered to allow you to fix the damage and eradicate the termites.

Termite Prevention

If you currently own a home and have found termite infestation then you should get a pest controller to spray the house. However, you can prevent termite infestation. Most pest controllers will offer a cheap and easy way to prevent termites from infesting your home. While this costs money you can be sure that you will be saving money if your home was to become reinfested by termites.

Termites can cause a great deal of damage to a home. A house is usually made of wood and as a result of the termites wood boring abilities they can reduce the stability of your home. By getting a termite inspection before you buy a house you can be sure that you are not paying a lot to get rid of the infestation or repair the damage they have caused.
